Name? Aidan Sullivan
Occupation? Assistant project manager at NC State
Where are you from? Minneapolis, MN
Have you played sports in the past? Rugby in high school, but besides that one season junior year, nothing for very long.
How long have you done Crossfit? Six months regularly, on and off for a few months before that.
How did you hear about Crossfit? To be very honest, I had a pretty negative view of Crossfit before starting to workout at SPCF. I’m very anti-fad diets and pro-body positivity, and the only things I heard about Crossfit from my jock & personal trainer friends was that it was full of muscle heads who were more concerned with gains than health. I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong after just one workout at SPCF.
What made you take the plunge? When we moved to Durham in August 2016, I bought an unlimited Classpass to try out a bunch of different gyms in the area. I was looking for something that was gonna kick my butt, but was scaleable: one size fits all workouts had kept me away from group workouts for years. SPCF was the first gym I attended that met me where I was, instead of assuming I was at a baseline fitness that I simply wasn’t at yet. From day one, SPCF coaches took the time to teach me form and technique: breaking a PR is awesome, but you can’t do anything at all if you injure yourself.
What has Crossfit done for you? I am absolutely the strongest and most flexible I’ve ever been! I almost couldn’t fit in my wedding dress because parts of my body that were once squishy are now hard – a way better feeling than starving myself with a wedding diet.
What is your favorite movement? What is your least favorite? I love snatches and bench press; they make me feel like a beefcake! I’m still working on my squat mobility, and kettlebells are so awkward.
What is your favorite SPCF memory? I’m an incredibly stiff person, mobility wise, so the first time I touched my toes was super simple but so rewarding! That had never happened before!
What would you tell others about Crossfit? While I am sure that there are super lame-o Crossfit gyms out there, Crossfit is the only exercise program I have ever stuck with. I had a ton of gym anxiety but now I actually look forward to working out every week! I feel armed with a ton of knowledge about lifting mechanics and what a good workout should look and feel like.
Why Southpoint Crossfit? I knew it was the gym for me when I looked around at the other athletes are noticed there was a healthy mix of body types and a whole lot of cool women working out and getting strong together. I’m never going to be a waif or a bodybuilder, and no one expects me to be anyone but my best self, whatever that looks like that day.
What are your interests outside of Crossfit? Baking, domestic violence survivor advocacy, trashy television, being outside, road trips, craft beer.
