Where are your from? I grew up in the Northeast, went to college in California and moved to Durham from Park City, Utah.
Have you played sports in the past? Yes. I grew up playing soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and ran winter track. I fell in love with lacrosse and continued playing at the collegiate level.
How long have you done Crossfit? Almost 6 months.
How did you hear about Crossfit? I saw a link on Facebook advertising a 6 week challenge.
What made you take the plunge? I was in nursing school for over a year and had put working out on the back burner. I was in desperate need to get back in shape and the fitness challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity.
What has Crossfit done for you? It has reinforced fitness as a priority in my life and has also given me a sense of routine. I love starting my day with a crossfit class. It’s also been great creating friendships with those that enjoy a good workout.
What is your favorite movement? What is your least favorite? My favorite movement would be box jumps. They are challenging in that my legs immediately start burning and my heart rate races, but the movement itself is relatively simple. My least favorite is snatches. That movement hasn’t clicked for me yet, it still feels awkward to have my hands so far apart.
What is your favorite SPCF memory? I loved participating in the competition vs Crossfit Carrboro in August. It was so fun to be surrounded by high energy athletes and also very inspirational to watch the experienced athletes compete.
Do you have a favorite moment from SPCF? What is it? At this point, it’s being able to feel the progression of a new skill introduced to me at Southpoint. Every time I manage to improve a skill I get really excited. It can something simple like doing better with my kipping movement that then leads to an improvement in a scaled movement like knees to bar. I’m also finally getting the hang of double unders. I still have to do a few single jumps before a double but it is definitely better than where I started!
What would you tell others about Crossfit? Just try it!
Why Southpoint Crossfit? I won’t lie, after I signed up for the challenge I had a moment of panic. I was afraid the members would be super intense, everyone would be overly competitive and I wouldn’t fit in. That wasn’t the case at all! The members were so welcoming on my first day. Those with experience offered helpful hints for the skill we were learning that day (kipping). It was also reassuring to look around and see members in all stages of performing that skill. Some were advancing to pull-ups, others were kipping with ease, and then there were a couple of us learning the movement on the ground. I love that with each skill or ‘metcon’ there are scaling options. Each coach has his/ her unique coaching style and safety is always a priority. The coaches help me scale the workout to my ability and guide me in the optimal weight I should use. No matter what level one is, he/ she will walk away from each workout feeling a sense of accomplishment and quite a bit of exhaustion.
What are your interests outside of Crossfit? I love snowboarding, skiing and mountain biking. I also enjoy reading, cooking and checking out the breweries in town. Being relatively new to North Carolina, its been fun exploring new areas like the beach or mountains.
